1995 - 2008
Ty Medlin was born on June 6, 1974. He grew up in the Dallas area and graduated in 1992 from Lakeview Centennial High School in Garland. Ty was an accomplished student athlete. An Honor Graduate and member of the National Honor Society, Ty was also a member of the State Champion Gymnastics Team from 1988-1992.
Following High School, Mr. Medlin attended the University of Texas where he was a Member of UT club gymnastics team.
Mr. Medlin accepted a position with ASI Gymnastics in 1995 as the Head Men’s Team Coach and served for thirteen years. During Mr. Medlin’s tenure the fledgling Men’s program grew into one of the dominant programs in the state of Texas and was respect within the region.
Due to his cooperative nature he formed relationships with many coaches in the region and soon began the ASI Boys Winter Classic Meet hosted each year at the ASI Lake Highlands facility. Mr. Medlin was also instrumental in the development of the ASI Lake Highlands training facility, introducing unique training techniques, and the infamous “Dog Pound”.
Mr. Medlin’s teams achieved success in the gym and outside the gym and understood teamwork. Many boys qualified to attend the National Training Center. Mr. Medlin also fostered strong family bonds hosting swim days at Burger’s Lake. Character, sportsmanship, hard work, performance, and humor were important to a well run Medlin workout.
Mr. Medlin also spent hours developing and documenting the boys program he deeply loved at ASI Gymnastics. He also worked tirelessly training anyone whenever asked. He always shared his knowledge. He was the ultimate student of the sport of gymnastics, translating into the ultimate coach.
Mr. Medlin also had many hobbies disguised as friendly relaxation but actually focused on fierce competition. Primarily golf, disc golf, and basketball. Losing was only an option for Mr. Medlin’s companions on these outings.
A gifted athlete, Ty received numerous awards in High School. He was an Honor Graduate and member of the National Honor Society, Ty was also a member of the State Champion Gymnastics Team from 1988-1992. A four year All-American, Ty served as Team Captain his senior year. Other High School Gymnastics Awards include the Emil Milan Gymnastics Scholarship Award Recipient, Michael Sims Memorial Gymnastics Scholarship Award Recipient, Senior Male Athlete of the Year 1992, Gale Fields Award 1992.
In collegiate competition Ty placed 4th All Around at the 1993 Nationals competing for University of Texas and was a member of the 1993 2nd place team. Mr. Medlin lives with his wife Rosanne and daughter Aubrey in Dallas. In 2007, Mr. Medlin received a BA in Psychology and a Minor in Biology, graduating Magna Cum Laude from the University of Texas at Dallas. He currently attends the University of North Texas Health Science Center Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences Class of 2009 and is pursuing a Masters in Medical Science.
For his technical contribution to ASI Gymnastics, for his excellence as a coach, for his innovation, for being the role model for so many athletes, for his positive attitude at all times, and for his constantly being a student of the sport of gymnastics, the science of sports, of medicine, and of the human body, Mr. Medlin represents everything ASI holds dearly to its culture. Yet he is still very young. Mr. Medlin a deserving member of the ASI Hall of Fame.
